Kervan Saray Beach The Kervan Saray Beach is an adventurers' lodge. The latest concept in Indian Ocean Island hospitality and underwater exploration, born from the dive company Swahili Divers, the Kervan Saray draws upon over a decade of experience of diving, anthropology and hospitality. While this hotel is the newest in Pemba, it houses the most experienced and long standing recognised dive centre in Pemba. If you want to dive in Pemba, then it has to be at The Kervan Saray. Yet we do not limit ourselves to diving. We welcome all of you who wish to come and see our Island. We invite you to come and relax with us. To recharge your batteries. To kayak, to cycle, to bird watch, to walk in the forest, to visit coastal Swahili villages and to do nothing if you so wish. Accommodation details : Each room has a shower that provides lukewarm water that is solar heated using an African Village system. On cloudy days the water is cool. Our rooms are exceptionally simple, built using only local materials with thatched roofs. The resort is so remote that it is off the National Power Grid. Electricity is provided by generator from 6pm to 6 am in the rooms, and in the office during the day. Guests are very welcome to use a large bank of plugs to recharge laptops, satellite phones and digital cameras. Where possible we use inverters and batteries. Others We have satellite and radio phones that can be used to call out for the appropriate fee. We have a computer dedicated for guest use, which is connected to our Satellite internet. The connection is of medium speed, associated with a VSAT connection. (128KB shared). This is available for use for a small fee. Eco lodge : Now almost all of our food and vegetables and beer come by dhow. Our water is heated using a bush solar system. Where possible we use inverters and batteries. Solar Electricity is being investigated by us at this time. Our staff walk to work or use bicycles, our cylinders are moved by ox cart. Where we have to use engines, we have retrofitted Turbocharged Direct injection Diesel engines to our Landrovers. These engines were imported from Great Britain and come up to the highest European pollution controls. All of our fast boats have been retrofitted with four stroke engines from the UK that also comply to European emissions controls. We are the only dive centre in Pemba that uses 4 stroke engines and the eco-friendly Direct injection engines in our Landrovers. We have made the correct investments at the correct time to ensure that the only carbon you use is the flight down to Tanzania. And as aircraft companies use more and more eco friendly engines, we believe that a long haul flight is a small carbon output given that it enables you to put money back into one of the world's poorest societies. Kitchen : Our cook Mzee Ali, has been with us for seven years. He is adept at cooking on charcoal and with the limited resources that Pemba once had. Happily the markets in Pemba are now bustling with fresh produce from the Usambara Mountains in mainland Tanzania. Our meat ranges from locally sourced products to imported meat from around the globe. Our fish varies from season to season. This is all line caught and dependant upon the luck of our local fishermen. Kervan Saray Beach offers you a set four course nightly menu. This includes salads, fruits, desserts, and of course a daily vegetarian option. Please be aware that due to local conditions, some items are seasonal.
