CHAPWANI PRIVATE ISLAND

From the West Coast of Zanzibar looking out over the Indian Ocean towards continental Africa, the eye falls on a group of islands. One of these is known as Chapwani, a natural paradise.

This is the perfect spot for those seeking a beautiful peaceful beach with Stone Town and all its facilities just 10 minutes away by boat.

On this magical little private island, there are only five bandas with a total of ten rooms, each with its own terrace leading on to the beach. The rooms are spacious, with a large bathroom and separate toilet. They are decorated with colourful African prints and furnished with local antiques and four poster beds. The restaurant on the water's edge provides a unique blend of Oriental, African and Italian cuisine.

The island covers an area of 50,000 metres and is surrounded by small coves with white sandy beaches and coral reefs full of multi-coloured fish. The thick tropical vegetation of baobabs, palm trees and passion fruits, harbours a small historic graveyard and rich wild-life including a herd of dik diks (miniature antilopes).

The management is European and there are only ten rooms just yards from the waters edge, each with a large verandah, private toilet and luxurious bathroom.

The size of the island, the few guests (maximum 20) and the many seperate beaches means that each person can find total privacy. The preparation of the food is supervised by an outstanding chef.

The partners, including the owners of House of Wonders, are of different nationalities: French, English, Italian and Zanzibari. For all of us the island is a dream come true. At low tide, a large sand bank can be reached from the Eastern tip of the island.

The island is an excellent base for snorkelling and diving: coral reef, dolphins, all between the English pass and the French pass. The magnificent sunset is a perfect time for your aperitif on the beach. At night Stone town, with its 40 mosques is a show of colours, lights and distant sounds.
